This looks like the Nietzsche quote that I remember my college friend Neal rendering (though I remember his version as differing slightly). Where's it from?
It's from Max Brod's biography of Franz Kafka (when you told it to me, you said you thought it was Kafka). This is the original German, and it's taken me a while to track it down. The funny thing is, I read this biography when I was a junior in college (as part of a larger project on Kafka), but I don't remember this particular exchange, even though it seems to be the quote from the book that everyone knows.
